Lt. Cmdr. Fredrick W. Masten, Jr

Lieutenant Commander Masten was born in Columbus, Georgia.  He enlisted in the Navy in August 1994 and reported to Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, IL.  Shortly thereafter in December 1994, he reported to USS THEODORE ROOSEVELT (CVN 71).  While stationed onboard he achieved the rank of Boatwain’s Mate Second Class and completed three deployments to U.S. Fifth and Sixth Fleet.

In January 2000, he reported onboard Naval Station Norfolk where he was assigned to the Security Department.  During this period he completed the requirements for conversion to Master-at-Arms (MA) and attended MA “A” school in 2002. 

Upon completion of MA “A” school, he reported onboard Naval Support Activity Hampton Roads Northwest Annex.  He was promoted to Master-at-Arms First Class Petty Officer in 2002 and in 2004 was selected and promoted to Master-at-Arms Chief Petty Officer in 2004.

In March of 2005, Chief Masten reported onboard USS NICHOLAS (FFG 47) where he served as the Chief Master-at-Arms and completed two deployments to U.S. Fifth and Sixth Fleet.  This tour was culminated in him receiving his commission as a Security Limited Duty Officer in January 2007. 

Upon receiving his commission, Ensign Masten reported onboard Navy Expeditionary Guard Battalion Guantanamo Bay, Cuba in February of 2007.  During this tour he served as the Camp One Officer in Charge and the Battalion Operation officer.

In April of 2008, Ensign Masten reported onboard Commander, Amphibious Squadron EIGHT where he served as the Staff Force Protection Officer.  During this tour, Lieutenant Junior Grade Masten deployed with NASSAU Amphibious Ready Group in 2010 and completed his Surface Warfare Officer qualification.

In September of 2010, Lieutenant Junior Grade Masten reported onboard Maritime Expeditionary Security Squadron TWO where he served as the Security Department’s Assistant Officer in Charge.  In 2011, Lieutenant Masten completed a deployment to U.S. Sixth Fleet.

In December of 2012, Lieutenant Masten reported onboard Navy Expeditionary Combat Command where he served as the Training Officer overseeing the training programs for Riverine, Maritime Expeditionary Security, Expeditionary Intel, and Expeditionary Guard Battalion forces.

In December of 2014, Lieutenant Masten reported onboard Naval Base San Diego where he served as the Installation Security Officer.  While onboard he was selected and promoted to his current rank of Lieutenant Commander.

In December of 2017, Lieutenant Commander Masten reported onboard the USS GERALD R. FORD (CVN 78) where he served as the Security Department Head.

In October of 2019, Lieutenant Commander Masten reported onboard Commander, U.S. Second Fleet where he served as the Deputy Director of Force Protection until transferring to Marine Corps Security Force Battalion, Kings Bay, Georgia in January 2022.     

Lieutenant Commander Masten holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Criminal Justice from Troy University and his personal awards include the Meritorious Service Medal, the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (eight), the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (six), and various command and service awards.
